Company Description At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern Job Description Introduction Are you an Engineer interested in the challenges of Printed Circuit Board (PCB) production techniques for the development of Micro-Pattern Gas Detectors (MPGD) for particle physics experiments? This hands-on role involves the design of detectors and requires a practical approach to problem-solving. The ideal candidate will also have proven experience in team management, demonstrating the ability to lead and inspire a team of technical engineers and technicians. If you are passionate about groundbreaking research and thrive in a dynamic, collaborative environment, we would love to hear from you! You will join: - The Experimental Physics (EP) Department, which carries out basic research in the field of experimental particle physics in a stimulating scientific atmosphere, standing as an important reference for the physics community. It also contributes to the education and training of young scientists. - The Detector Technologies (DT) group, participating in the development, construction, operation and maintenance of particle detectors and their technical infrastructure for the LHC experiments and several other experiments at CERN. - The EP-DT Micro-Pattern Technologies (MPT) workshop carries out the full design and production of micro-pattern gaseous detectors such as GEM detectors and MicroMegas. The service also produces PCBs and flex-cables for special applications. Functions As Engineer for the MPT workshop, initially you will: - Join a team of experts to ensure the smooth operation of MPT Workshop, - Together with the MPT Workshop Leader, co-chair meetings with experts to discuss maintenance, operation, and consolidation efforts, - Contribute to design activities for future gaseous detector projects, both for CERN and for the international community, - Participate in Research and Development of technologies for MPGD detector and associated technologies, in participating to the production of novel detectors, - Give advice to the workshop users on all the available technologies, - Supervise contractor activities. Qualifications Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of electronics, or material science, or applied physics or a related field. Experience: - Extensive experience in the Printed Circuit board production (Rigid, Flex, Flex/Rigid), - Proven experience in the design of Printed circuit Boards, - Proven experience with the software UCAM creating all the files for the production chain, - Proven experience in management of a production team. Technical competencies: - Fabrication of electronic circuit boards, - Simulation, design and development of (parts of) detectors like MPGD detectors (GEM, uRwells , Micromegas, THGEM etc..), - Operation and maintenance of all PCB production machines (CNC, plating lines, Etching lines, Isostatic press, Autoclave, AOI, LDI, Photolithography, Electrical testers, Vacuum deposition), - Use CAD design software such as UCAM or GENESYS. Behavioural competencies: - Optimising Resources: Effectively managing budget, optimizing human and financial resources, Planning activities, structuring the unit and assigning tasks and responsibilities in line with unit goals, Realistically assessing human and financial resource needs, evaluating risks and plans accordingly. - Setting Direction: Ensuring that individual staff members fully understand their tasks, roles and responsibilities, Setting clear, challenging and attainable objectives; defining and communicating performance indicators, Delegating tasks by giving responsibility for content and methodology; maintaining overall accountability for outcome. - Solving Problems: Identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them, Finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available, Assimilating large quantities of information, identifying key issues and formulating conclusions clearly and concisely. - Demonstrating Flexibility: Demonstrating a willingness to accept changing circumstances; supporting initiatives for change, Adapting quickly and resourcefully to shifting priorities and requirements. Language skills: Spoken and written English and French: ability to understand and speak the other language in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages.
