The division of Geoscience and remote sensing (GEO) is looking for one or several student/project assistants to help us with various projects from mid-August to the end of the year. You will be working closely with us scientists and be involved in ongoing research projects, including to handle data from entirely new Earth observation satellites. Job description You will support a scientist in the handling and analysis of Earth observation data. One position aims to get us started with two new satellite missions, EarthCARE and the Arctic Weather Satellite. The primary responsibilities are to automatise the downloading and perform basic data analysis. For the talented and interested student, it will be possible to get deeper involved in the research, such as performing machine learning-based retrievals (i.e., extracting geophysical data from observations). A possible second position has the aim to download radar images from the satellite Sentinel-1 and the Radarsat constellation mission and compare the satellite images with sea ice information collected during an expedition in the Gulf of Bothnia with the research vessel Skagerak. During the expedition, acoustic data were collected with an autonomous underwater vehicle and aerial photos were taken with a drone. If successful, data from an Arctic expedition with the Swedish icebreaker Oden can also be included. Contract terms The positions are temporary, with August 19 as a tentative start date. Both student (part-time) and project (full-time) positions can be considered (decided after discussion with the applicant), until maximum of December 31. Qualifications A bachelor's degree in the areas of physics or engineering. We will put particular emphasis on: - Strong programming skills and knowledge of Python - An interest in geophysics or physics in general. Meritorious A finalised master´s degree.
