Development of a new rotational angle selector attachment for tightening tools

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions. The current and future product feature offering requires development of our assembly lines to increase the flexibility of our production equipment.

This master thesis project is a great opportunity for students that have an interest for product development within a production setting.

Background:

Today there is very limited flexibility in tightening tool installations at the Scania final assembly truck plants.

To reach joints on our various truck configurations, there is a need to position tightening tools in different angles. Individual tightening tool installations are developed for different angles using the same type of tightening tool.

The result of this is a complex and extended product and production development process for new positions of joints on the truck, reduced space for new tool installations on our assembly lines and an overall waste of resources for Scania.

Project description:

The goal of the master thesis is to conceptualize, develop and manufacture an angle selector component that attaches to an existing tightening tool. The angle selector component will attach to a reaction arm which will then attach to an interface in the ceiling.

The students will initiate the project with a concept study aided by contributions from KTH Södertälje Mechanical Engineering Bachelors in course Design and Product Development 2. A final concept will be developed and presented at a decision milestone to approve for manufacturing. There is possibility for a concept modification loop in this stage if Scania deems it necessary.

When the prototype is manufactured it shall be tested and reviewed in a production environment.

Preferred 3D CAD software tool is Autodesk Inventor as it is used by tool designers at Scania as standard.

Timeframe:

26 weeks, starts in January. Interviews will be held throughout the process.

Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering.
