Scania CV AB is constantly developing its methods in design and manufacturing in order to maintain its position as world leading manufacturer for heavy trucks and buses. The rise of new emission legislations are increasing the demands of robust and reliable aftertreatment systems to maintain its functionality throughout the vehicles lifecycle. The aftertreatment system is a complex welded component and its structural integrity is highly dependent on the customer applications which varies heavily depending on the market, causing different thermomechanical load cycles on the aftertreatment system. In order to further shorten the lead time for design and validation of new aftertreatment systems, there is a need to improve the validation procedure. To achieve this, a damage model is necessary.Target:
To contribute to the method development of reliable simulation models which can be used to predict lifetime from a thermal load perspective.Assignment:
Develop a damage model describing the relation between expected thermomechanical fatigue life and the applied temperature cycle.
- Perform some thermomechanical fatigue tests on base material together with welded specimens to validate the proposed damage model.
- Benchmark the model against the real thermal tests on Scania’s aftertreatment systems.
