30 credits – Big data evaluation of the globally in use vehicle fleet

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

A thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project. The engine control diagnostics groups are responsible for requirements, development and certification of onboard diagnostics (OBD) in the control system for the engine and engine aftertreatment systems (EATS). The responsibility consists of requirement setting and development of products, processes and methods within this area. The group’s main assignment is to ensure that the system’s OBD functionality fulfills the legal requirement for OBD and the safety and security standards that the system shall fulfill.

The OBD monitors of each single vehicle are stored to a data base that Scania and the various international authorities use to analyse our vehicle fleet. As Scania develops in more markets, our products are being put under different uses and more challenging circumstances which make this data even more meaningful. As concepts such as internet of things (IoT) gain importance and will play a crucial role in high-tech products, connectivity cannot be left aside and Scania is willing to explore the different benefits that it can contribute with.

Design of an onboard diagnostics tool that analyses in a concise way the information received by the Scania vehicles in use.

Understand the legal requirements in OBD monitoring performance that Scania faces and how uses its data base to produce such reports.

Analyse the existing data base for the vehicle’s currently in use and provide a smart method on how to transform information into knowledge in order to exploit the possibilities that vehicle connectivity can provide.

The ultimate outcomes are:
  • a qualitative monitor that displays periodically what is the Scania’s OBD performance
  • a smart solution that relates the OBD performance of the fleet with different variables and searches for trends.
