Background:
The technical development of autonomous vehicles is progressing rapidly, and such vehicles will soon have a place in our everyday life. The ultimate goal of this transport revolution is to have cars, trucks and buses which have a smaller environmental footprint, that are cheaper to operate and, even more importantly, can guarantee higher safety standards than their manually driven counterparts.

Safety can only be ensured if the autonomous vehicles have a clear understanding of theirs surroundings, effectively perceiving other road users and predicting their actions and movements over time. This information, in conjunction with the application of traffic rules, can then be used for tactical decision making and for planning safe maneuvers.

Target:
Design a framework that effectively and reliably can predict the most likely movements and actions of other vehicles in simple traffic situations. The target of this thesis is to design a framework to support decision making on board autonomous vehicles.

Assignment:
The assignment is divided into four sub-tasks: 1. To evaluate possible solutions to effectively predict the movements and behavior of other vehicles; 2. To investigate how to combine sensor data and a-priori information (e.g., a road map, complex behavior models) to improve the predictions; 3. To design and implement a framework that can be used for such; and 4. Test the work in simulation and/or in real experiments.

Education:
Master (civilingenjör) in computer science, engineering physics, electrical engineering, or applied mathematics, preferably with specialization in artificial intelligence algorithms, control theory, optimal control or optimization.
