Common rail fuel injection systems are essential to ensure accuracy and robustness of the fuel injection in todays’ diesel engines. An electronically controlled pump is the beating heart of the common rail system. With pressures ranging up to 1800 bar during normal engine operation it is important to have fast and robust control for the pressure build up process. Here is where the control art comes into the picture and our work begins.

Developing a physical model for the high pressure fuel system with focus on the high pressure pump is one major goal of the thesis. It should also be possible to use the model as a feedforward in the controller design for the pressure build up in the high pressure system.
The candidate will work in collaboration with Scania R&D engineers in Södertälje. The idea is that at thesis ends delivering a Simulink model usable for simulation of the injection process with a controller for the outflow of the high pressure pump.Educational profile
We believe that the proposed thesis is suitable for a master student studying engineering physics, electrical engineering, vehicular engineering, or mechatronics. The competences described below is judged vital for a successful project.
- Good knowledge in Matlab/Simulink.
- Knowledge on model development and verification.
- Knowledge in signal processing and internal combustion engines is a plus.
