About the position
The Faculty of Technology, Natural Sciences and Maritime Sciences (TNM) at the University of South-Eastern Norway (USN) has a vacant permanent position as associate professor/Senior Lecturer in the study programme Civil Engineering with emphasis on the field of BIM. The position is at the Department of Process, Energy and Environmental Technology and reports to the Head of Department. The place of employment is currently Porsgrunn, Norway. Start of employment immediately.

TNM Porsgrunn offers bachelor's degrees in various engineering sciences, for example Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, IT and Automation, as well as master's degrees in e.g. Industrial IT and Automation, and Energy and Environmental Technology. The advertised position is part of the study programme Civil Engineering, which has two study tracks (Building Design and Planning and Infrastructure).

Research within engineering sciences at USN campus Porsgrunn is organised in research groups, for example Energy and CO2-capture or Self Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology (SMART) . The research groups have advanced research laboratories at their disposal.

Responsibilities and duties
Central responsibilities include research, tuition and supervision of students in the study programme Civil Engineering, with main emphasis on Civil Engineering relevant IT-tools, particularly BIM. Supervision of student projects including Bachelor-theses is part of the position.

The education we offer is to be research-based, both terms of teaching practice and content. Our instructors should have experience in, or should have self-motivation to focus on the development of their teaching practice and the interaction of tuition and research.

The holder of the position will have the freedom to define related, relevant research activities according to the civil engineering courses taught as well as other ongoing research groups at the Department (see above).

Participation in development of academic and administrative tasks related to the study programme is expected. The position may also be assigned, if needed, to participate in the tuition of other subjects across departments within the University of South-Eastern Norway.

The applicant should be familiar with relevant regulations within the discipline. Broad experience in the Civil Engineering sector and familiarity with Norwegian regulations and standards within the sector are an advantage for the applicant.

The university considers e-learning to be a priority area, and the successful candidate must be able to supervise and teach students using online tools and digital media. It is emphasised that the successful candidate should have an interest and significant competencies in pedagogical work and civil engineering-related research. Applicants should be able to document pedagogical competence of at least a half-year practical pedagogical training, or shorter university pedagogy courses. Applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within 3 years of the date of their employment. Courses within university pedagogy will be offered.

The successful applicant must have the ability to work independently and at the same time be motivated to share their knowledge and participate in collaborative projects. Individual suitability will be assessed.

To be appointed as associate professor, applicants must have a Norwegian Ph.D. in the relevant field or a comparable foreign Ph.D. that is approved as being of the same quality as a Norwegian doctorate, or competency on a comparable level with documented scientific work of the same scope and quality.

To be appointed as a senior lecturer applicants must be able to document extensive research and development work which in quality and scope is equivalent to the workload and level of a doctoral dissertation. Special qualifications in teaching or other educational activities will be taken into consideration.

If no qualified applicants apply for permanent employment as associate professor/ senior lecturer, a temporary three-year appointment for lecturer may be made, if the expert committee considers that the person selected will be able to acquire the necessary qualifications to be appointed to the position as associate professor within that period. A new expert assessment will be completed by the end of this period.

Tuition language can be English, however, because undergraduate tuition language is Norwegian, the successful applicant must be interested in learning one of the Scandinavian languages (Norwegian, Swedish or Danish) according to further agreement.

Salary and conditions
Associate professor (førsteamanuensis) (code 1011) and associate professor (førstelektor) (code 1198): NOK 542 400 - 741 300. In special cases, a higher salary might be considered. Salary placement depending on seniority and competence. A statutory contribution will be made from the employee's salary to the Norwegian state pension plan.

Additional information
The Academic Appointments Board is responsible for appointments to academic positions at the University of South-Eastern Norway. An expert committee will evaluate the applications. Based on the committee's recommendations, short-listed applicants will be called in for interviews and must be prepared to give a practice lecture.
