Scania Ferruform has previously investigated alternative methods for removing unwanted residual stresses in the rear axles after they have been welded. Today, all rear axles pass through an oven for stress relaxation annealing, but Scania Ferruform is interested in the so-called BS (Bend Straightening) method. In order evaluate this concept, these two methods need to be compared from a fatigue strength viewpoint, to ensure the quality of the product.
Determine what areas have the highest levels of residual stresses and where the failure nodes are on today’s rear axles. Construct and run small scale experiments (or simulations) in order to characterise how the variables of the BS method impact the resulting fatigue strength. Based on this information formulate a recommendation for how the BS process should be performed in order to increase the fatigue strength of the axles.
